MEXICO CITY, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) — Club America jumped to the top of Mexico’s Liga MX standings on Friday with a 3-1 away victory over Mazatlan.
Diego Valdes gifted the hosts the lead in the 11th minute when he deflected the ball into his own net while attempting to defend a corner with his shoulder.
The Chilean playmaker made amends with a 39th-minute strike, and Henry Martin put his team ahead by bundling home from close range just before halftime.
Mazatlan was reduced to 10 men in the 58th minute as Carlos Vargas was shown a second yellow card for a bad challenge.
Sebastian Caceres added a third goal for the visitors by sending a header into the bottom left corner after an Alvaro Fidalgo set piece.
The result marked America’s sixth consecutive league victory, and Fernando Ortiz’s men now have a one-point lead over second-placed Monterrey. Mazatlan is 13th with 11 points from as many games.
Juarez drew 2-2 at Puebla in Friday’s only other fixture. ■
